When teaching music, I feel we are in the Zone with my students. Sharing our struggles, wins, and music makes us get to know each other. It is a heartwarming, meaningful communication.
My name is Nora, and I teach piano and music theory.
After receiving a master’s degree in classical piano in Hungary, I joined an enormous cruise ship and started my seven-year journey. It wasn’t just an endless trip, waking up in a different town every morning, but a musical journey.
The cruise ship is like a tiny planet with all the different traditions and characters on board. Musicians are the heart of the entertainment team. We played together, learning from each other.
A new chapter started when I went to Paris to study jazz. I hardly settled down and created a new routine at Imep Paris College of Music when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. It was impossible to play in public. I had to do something else, so I started giving piano lessons online.
It felt a bit like on a cruise ship because I saw people from all over the world. The new elements were the students’ enthusiasm and diligence. They made me passionate about teaching.
The explosion of online events opened doors not only for students but also for teachers. That’s how I discovered the UMT teachers’ community and became an Ultimate Music Theory certified teacher.
Discovering the deeper levels of music teaching was a life-changing experience. Since then, working with my students has become essential for me. Their questions are a constant inspiration, and seeing their musical growth fuels my curiosity about how to teach better.
I am grateful for doing a creative work that’s surprising every day.
